# Turn on accounting

> Activate accounting yourself, and start the books with an opening balance.

With accounting turned on, Envoi keeps the books for you. Invoices, credit notes, supplier invoices and payments are posted automatically as you work in Envoi.

The owner of the company activates accounting. It takes a few minutes.

## Before you start

Go to **Accounting** at the top, then **Overview**. You see the card **Activate accounting**, with what is needed.

Under **Sort these out first** you see anything that is missing, with a link to where you fix it. The button becomes available once everything is sorted out:

* The company must have a nine-digit organisation number.
* Your profile must have both a first name and a last name.
* Open customer invoices must have a customer.
* Open supplier invoices must have a supplier and be in Norwegian kroner.

Have this ready:

* The balance of your bank account on the day the books start.
* The share capital, if the company is a limited company.
* The SAF-T file from your previous system, if you are switching from another accounting system.

## Activate

Choose **Continue to activation**. You go through five steps. Your answers are saved along the way, so you can take a break and continue later with **Finish activation**.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Company">
    Look over the name, organisation number and company form (limited company or sole proprietorship), and answer whether the company is VAT registered, and from which date.
  </Step>

  <Step title="VAT">
    If the company is VAT registered, choose how often you file the VAT return: **Every two months (six periods)** or **Once a year (annual period)**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start">
    Answer whether you have kept books in another system, and choose **First day of the books**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Starting position">
    Enter the opening balance: what the company owns and owes on the first day of the books. You type in the figures yourself, or upload the SAF-T file from your previous system. See [Opening balance](/en/regnskap/inngaaende-balanse).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Summary">
    Look over everything, tick that you have checked the figures, and choose **Activate accounting**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The opening balance is posted as the first entry, and accounting is turned on in the same operation. The chart of accounts is set up automatically.

<Warning>
  Documents created before accounting was activated are not posted. Envoi itself includes open invoices from before in the opening balance, one by one. You do not type them in.
</Warning>

## Who can activate

Only the owner of the company can activate accounting. After that, owners and administrators can use Accounting.
